Year 3 Learning WC 21.01.19

English This week in English, there will be a heavy focus on the accurate use of inverted commas to show direct speech. We teach the children 4 rules in the application of this punctuation mark: - Inverted commas to open and close speech - Punctuation to go before the closing inverted commas - New speaker, new line - Use synonyms for said (e.g. whispered, exclaimed, replied, etc.) Maths We will be continuing to focus on fractions this week in maths, looking particularly at: - finding fractions of shapes - finding fractions of quantities - adding and subtracting fractions - comparing and ordering fractions When finding fractions of a quantity, the children should know to divide by the denominator and multiply by the numerator. Regarding the maths workshop delivered on Tuesday, the office will send out the information delivered via Parent Mail.

Year 3 learning for WC 14.01.19

Week Commencing 14.01.19 English This week in English, we are beginning to look at the book 'Leon and the Place Between'. We will be focusing on the following grammatical elements: - Prepositions expressing place. E.g. through, between, across, below, etc - Correct use of a thesaurus to find synonyms. - Accurate use of apostrophes for possession and contraction. Maths This week, we are beginning to look at fractions. We will be focusing on the following aspects: - Comparing fractions - Ordering fractions - Equivalent fractions. Year 3 Learning for WC 07.01.19

Welcome back and a Happy New Year to you all! This term, we are trialing something new whereby we share what Year 3 will be learning about in English and Math each week. This information will be posted on the blog and will allow you to keep up-to-date with what your child is being taught within the core subjects on a weekly basis. English This week, the children are writing two diary extracts based on the book 'Owl Bat, Bat Owl'. Within their diary entries, we are looking for the following features: First person - To write in first person, the children should be using personal pronouns such as I, me, my, our, we. Past tense - The children should be beginning to recognise how to change both regular and irregular words into the past tense. This is touched upon in their spellings. Fronted adverbials , predominantly adverbs of time such as 'in the morning', 'yesterday', 'before long'. A comma should follow a fronted adverbial. Emotive language -
